Here are some things you may not know about Chokundi Cemetery

The "Chokundi Cemetery", named after the 600-year-old city of Khumshan, has a history buried in itself. The cemetery is located behind the Razzaqabad Police Training Center near Steel Town, about 38 km from Karachi.

What does quadrant mean?

The quadrilateral is called the "four corners". All the tombs here have four corners, which is probably why it is known as the "Chokundi Cemetery". The tombs here are said to belong to the "Jokhio" and "Baloch" tribes. Domes are supported by pillars.

The Chokundi cemetery is in a way divided into two parts. The number of graves is low in the eastern part and very high in the western part. The locals say that in the eastern part of the cemetery are the graves of the Jokhio tribe while in the western part are the graves of the Baloch people.

The Chokundi Cemetery is a masterpiece of architecture and sculpture and is historically one of the most important cemeteries in Pakistan.

All the tombs here are made of more sandstone. Rectangular tombs are usually two and a half feet wide, five feet long and four to six feet high. The tombs are regularly carved.

The painting features flowers, various designs, headbands and latticework similar to the crowns of Egyptian kings. Tall domes have been erected on some of the tombs, indicating that ordinary people are not buried in the Chokundi cemetery.

Men's graves are marked with swordsmanship, horsemanship and swords, daggers, etc., while women's graves are decorated with beautiful ornaments.

Some people say about this place that at night, usually after sunset, there are screams and noises, but there is no conclusive proof as to how true this is.

600سال قدیم شہرِ خموشاں کے نام سے منسوب '' چوکنڈی کا قبرستان '' اپنے آپ میں ایک تاریخ دفن کئیے ہوئے ہے۔ یہ قبرستان کراچی شہرسے تقریباً 38کلومیٹر کے فاصلے پر اسٹیل ٹاؤن کے قریب رزاق آباد پولیس ٹریننگ سینٹر کے عقب میں واقع ہے۔

آخر چوکنڈی کا مطلب ہے کیا؟

چوکنڈی ’’چار کونوں‘ ‘کو کہتے ہیں۔ یہاں موجود تمام قبروں کے چار کونے ہیں غالباً اسی وجہ سےیہ ’’چوکنڈی قبرستان‘ ‘کے نام سے معروف ہے۔یہاں موجود قبریں’’جوکھیو‘ اور’ ’بلوچوں‘‘دو قبیلوں کی بتائی جاتی ہیں۔ جن پر ستونوں کے سہارے گنبد کھڑے کئے گئے ہیں۔

چوکنڈی کا قبرستان ایک طرح سے دو حصوں میں منقسم ہے۔ مشرقی حصے میں قبروں کی تعداد کم جبکہ غربی حصے میں بہت زیادہ ہے۔ اس قبرستان کےبارے میں مقامی لوگوں کا کہنا ہے کہ مشرقی حصہ میں جوکھیوقبیلے کے افراد کی قبریں ہیں جب کہ مغربی حصہ میں بلوچ قوم کے افراد دفن ہیں۔

چوکنڈی کا قبرستان فنِ تعمیر ومہارت اور نقش ونگاری کے کام کا بہترین نمونہ ہے اور تاریخی حیثیت سے پاکستان کے اہم گور ستانوں میں سے ایک ہے۔

یہاں موجود تمام مقبرے زیادہ ترپیلے اور رتیلے پتھروں سے تعمیر کئے گئےہیں۔ مستطیل نما قبریں عموماً ڈھائی فٹ چوڑی، پانچ فٹ لمبی اور چار سے چھ فٹ تک اونچی ہیں۔قبروں پر باقاعدہ نقش و نگاری کی گئی ہے۔

نقاشی میں پھول ، مختلف ڈیزائن، مصرکے بادشاہوں کے تاج سے ملتے جلتے سرہانےاور جالیاں تعمیر کی گئی ہیں۔ کچھ قبروں پر بلندوبالا گنبد بھی تعمیر کئے گئے ہیں جو اس بات کی نشان دہی کرتے ہیں کہ چوکنڈی کے قبرستان میں عام لوگ دفن نہیں ہیں

مردوں کی قبروں پر تلوار بازی، گھڑ سواری اور تلوار، خنجر و غیرہ کے نقوش ہیں جبکہ خواتین کی قبروں پر خوبصورت زیورات نما نقش بنائے گئے ہیں۔

اس جگہ کے بارے میں کچھ لوگوں کا کہنا یہ ہے کہ رات کے وقت عموماً سورج غروب ہونے کے بعد چیخ پکار اور شور کی آوازیں آتی ہیں مگر اس بات کا کوئی حتمی ثبوت نہیں ہے کہ اس بات میں کس حد تک صداقت ہے ۔۔۔
